Dinner & drinks to celebrate Little Miss

In addition to my family baby shower (see related post) I wanted to celebrate with my gorgeous girlfriends and thank them for putting up with me during my pregnancy (let’s just say I don’t love being pregnant!) so I hosted an intimate dinner one Saturday evening, about one month before my little girl arrived.

.

Inspired by a recent fashion show invite I sourced some very thick card to create the weighty invites.  The silver, black & white invites set the colour scheme for the evening and informed my styling choices for the event.

I retained the feature of white paper pom poms, lanterns and mini singlets that I had arranged (with huge amounts of help from my poor husband) for my earlier family afternoon tea over the dining table.  The table was styled simply with thick pillar candles of various heights, silver & white fine bone china place settings and crisp white napkins.  Each guest was gifted a framed photo (one of my favourites of them during “pre-baby” partying) and was asked to find a copy of their photo in a small guest book and leave a message along side it.

I used Floreat Floral once again for the flowers (I’m obsessed) and Piquant Catering for both the food and serving.  The Piquant team were fantastic.  They were happy to serve alcohol we had sourced independently and were friendly and efficient throughout the evening.  The food was truly divine and there was plenty of it!  I ordered the divine cake from Simmone Logue in Double Bay, which we enjoyed with mascapone as we relaxed post dinner.

Personally, Im just not into baby shower games so we filled the evening with good wine, good conversation and many laughs.  At the request of my girlfriends I opened the very generous gifts of tiny pink outfits and toys.  There was much “ooohing and ahhing” for the first couple of presents…then true to our style we went back to drinking and chatting and laughing the night away.

As guests left they received a little vanilla cupcake I had baked that morning (baking I can do…cooking, not so much!).  Something to nibble on the way home.

A little afternoon tea for a little miss to be!

My little girl is almost 8 months old (photos of the mini stylist soon, I promise!), however before she came into this world, I celebrated her impending arrival with my closest family.  I put on a small afternoon tea at our place (my husband kindly made himself scarce)  to allow the guests to see the nursery (and it meant that at 7 months pregnant I did not have to travel!)

Welcome singlet

I kept things simple with a non-alcoholic punch, champagne & sparkling mineral water for drinks and my family help provide sweet and savoury nibbles.  We used simple white fine bone china with a silver detail and served food on white platters and serving stands.  I kept the decorations sophisticated (white pom pom decorations from Papier D’Amour) with just a little hint of “baby” – cute mini singlets on baby white coathangers formed part of the main display…and a little singlet greeted guests at the door.

I asked guests to leave a tip or trick for my husband and I…or just their best wishes.  It was just lovely reading through them together later in the evening after everyone had gone home.

Style tips for your baby shower…cute prizes that do double duty

I personally do not believe games are a must for baby showers, however I know a lot of people love them, and a lot of mums-to-be request some form of a game at their event.  Games can also help to relax the mood where you have a number of people who do not know each other.  Here at catherine and grace we think a quick game is a good game as they retain the interest of everyone (even those corporate types, of which I was one in a previous life(!), who have never been to a baby shower before).
.
Make it a little more exciting with little prizes for the winners (or losers) of each game.  It is inevitable that you will have people at your shower with young children and people with grown-up children or no children at all.  Catering to everyone can be difficult, however it is important to make everyone feel equally part of the fun.  For prizes for baby shower games, we like to use items predominately used by parents, and attach a little tag explaining how they are actually super useful for those single in the city as well (or anything in between).

Baby shower prizes
The prizes used for a recent baby shower we styled were:
Baby powder
For baby: an essential during nappy changes.
For babes: a great substitute when your dry shampoo runs out just as you are leaving for a hot date!
Baby oil
For baby: keeps your little one’s skin silky smooth.
For babes: You too can have silky smooth skin (perhaps with a massage as well)…why let the babies have all the fun
Little people’s socks
For baby: to keep those little toes warm
For babes: a brilliant iPhone or iPod protector
Let me know any other baby items for which there is a great “grown-up” person use!
