Freelance fashion: working out & about

Freelance fashion: what I wear, when.

I have dramatically slimmed down my wardrobe recently. This was not of my choosing – we put most of our clothes and personal effects into a storage container when we sold our house, thinking we would be in a new house in perhaps 4 months. That was 6 months ago!

The upside? I have learnt just how few items I need in my wardrobe, provided they are good quality, multi-use pieces, like these leather pants that I wear virtually everyday.

I tend to schedule multiple meetings or events on the same day (days Little Miss is at day care) so sometimes the look needs to take me from a casual coffee catch up with a client, to a trade show, to a meeting in the city with some of my former corporate colleagues. I should say, I would not have worn leather to work when I worked in corporate law, however as a freelancer, I feel very comfortable meeting my former colleagues in the boardroom in these leather pants.05- Industry event - freelance fashion WEB- styling and photography by CATHERINEGRACE copyright 2015Here are my go-tos for a work day, out and about:

  • Chic flats (yes, the same ones I included in my kids party post). I always wear flats when out and about. Firstly, I could be on public transport, walking between bus stops and trains, or I may be driving and find a park far away. I can’t stand that feeling of arriving at a meeting with blisters on my feet. Secondly, at events within the creative industry I get a little nervous (true!) I am fairly new to this world and I often feel a little out of my depth. Flats prevent that wobble in my step!
  • Leather pants. Mine are Willow, however there are so many beautiful ones on the market. They are reasonably expensive. In fact I drew breath when I saw the price. However I have worn these so much more than any other pair of pants or jeans that I own; they have definitely been worth it.
  • A roomy bag to hold my laptop, wallet, water bottle, business cards, notebook, pens, sunglasses, phone, hand cream and a lip balm. This bucket bag is from Scanlan & Theodore and, helpfully, comes with a shoulder strap for when I need both hands free. Unbelievably it also fits a laptop.
  • Sleeved top in a light fabric. Especially in Sydney, if I have a long-sleeved top in a light fabric (this one is from Sass & Bide), I can pretty much do without a jumper and not be too hot from April to October. In high Summer I probably need a tee.

And that’s it!

Freelance fashion: kids party

Freelance fashion: what I wear, when.

This past Sunday we had not one, but two, children’s birthday parties. I’m pretty sure it was one of the best days of Little Miss’ life so far. First up was her bestie’s 3rd birthday at Centennial Park which included ‘Elsa’ to sing, dance and make balloon animals for the kids. Next we headed to North Sydney, to the newly revamped The Greens, for my friends’ child’s first birthday which included 4 huge jumping castles that simply delighted Little Miss.

My kids birthday party outfit essentials?

  • Chic flats – there is a lot of standing at kids parties.
  • Leather pants – easy to wipe off little sticky finger marks. These are Willow and I absolutely LOVE them, so much so that I now have two identical pairs.
  • COFFEE, obviously.
  • And of course why not a pair of lace mouse ears!

Oh and ps how cute is the little watermelon garland from new stationary outfit, The Chaos Club, perfect for any kids party.

I took some shots for The Corporate Kid {the fabulous nanny sourcing agency we used to source our nanny} and I thought I’d share some of the best ones.
