A little while ago I was asked by the lovely Sam from Dunne with Style {and new venture Ivy & Oak} to contribute to a section in issue 4 of Sweet Magazine that she was guest editing. The issue was all about boys – young and old – and providing party inspiration to men of all ages. I decided to style a four-year old’s birthday party. Slightly out of my comfort zone, being the mother of just one girl – however I gave it my best shot!As soon as I saw the stunning we are superheros + rock stars cushion from Sari Jane Home Accents I knew I had my theme! And what little boy doesn’t want to be a superhero, a rock star or both?
When I think of rock stars and superheros – shiny and bright comes to mind. I reflected this in the styling with gold and silver metallic elements across the scene, including balloons, cushions and capes for the little ones. I used a base of black and white to keep the gold and silver grounded and the look suitably “boyish” and accented with a blush pink, to offset the hardness of the black, white and metallics.
Again taking inspiration from the we are superheros + rock stars cushion; I followed the dripped look of the typography and sourced a custom watercolour batman print and customised the DIY slippery slide, both with a similar drip. Camera prints and play cameras surround the styling – a re-imagining of the paparazzi flocking to the rock stars.
For the full DIY slippery slide tutorial you’ll have to check out Sweet Magazine. Sweet Magazine’s “Let’s Hear it for the Boys!” issue is out now.
Parties, above all, should be fun! In addition to the slippery slide, which was a big hit, the boys enjoyed channelling their inner batman in superhero masks & capes, playing on their guitars and lots and lots of bubbles!
Guests took home goodie bags packed with lollies and a small guitar key ring or play camera – to continue the partying all the way home.
{thank you}
Thank you Sam, for including me in your guest edit and to Lisa, from Sweet Magazine, for publishing my little styled shoot.
Enormous thank you to the three gorgeous boys that came to star in the shoot, and of course their lovely mums.
A huge thank you to Jill from Sari Jane Home Accents for not only lending me the we are superheros & rockstars cushion, but for also unknowingly providing me with the inspiration for the entire shoot.
Thank you to Nat and Kristy from Norsu for lending me the Pia Wallen cross blanket {shown over the clothes rack} and Sne felt basket {holding guitars}
