The space swap {part 2}: creative work space makeover for Officeworks

#09 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014I was recently approached by Officeworks to be part of their Master Your Workspace campaign. Officeworks gifted me a voucher to purchase products to makeover my work space and share the before and after shots with my readers. And I have a $100 Officeworks gift card to give away to one of you {see the end of the post for details}Please note this competition has now closed. Thank you everyone for your entries.

The winner is Angela {Mrs Oliver} – I just loved her whole list of items and the fact that she mentioned on Instagram that even her husband thought it was time for a makeover means it is well and truly time for a creative workspace update! Congratulations Angela, please email me at contactcatherinegrace@gmail.com to provide your details so I can send you your gift card. xxC#13 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014With my business growing my desk was getting a little, well lets just say, out of control! I needed easy access to a filing system that didn’t require the time to open boxes or folders. I realise this sounds incredibly lazy, however if it is a choice between dumping the receipts in a pile on the desk as I rush in from day care pick up or taking time to open folders, find a hole-punch and file correctly, unfortunately I would usually choose the former. I’ve been wanting to finalise the styling of my work space for a while. When Little Miss and I swapped spaces a while back I styled up her space – see The space swap {part 1} – so now it was my turn. With the new financial year well underway I also wanted to ensure that for FY14/15 I was more organised than the previous financial year and a great place to start is to get my workspace under control. In addition, working with Officeworks products is a good opportunity to show you how you can turn well-priced pieces from Officeworks into storage solutions and work spaces that conform with the style of your space. #10 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014#02 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014#03 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014I popped into Officeworks with a friend and she spotted this fabulous 5 drawer filing cabinet. The shallow drawers are perfect for workspaces – there is nothing worse that deep drawers piled with items preventing the ability to find what is right at the bottom. I added simple washi tape labels and used a chalk pen to write descriptions. This cabinet works perfectly to keep stamps, return address labels, stationery and other items I use regularly, on hand.#14 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014#05 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014#07 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014For receipts, press material waiting for review and documents on current projects I needed a temporary filing system as these items are constantly being used. Magazine files seemed a great option, however I wanted a kraft paper look to tie in with the rest of the styling. I couldn’t find the right ones until my very clever husband thought to turn these grey ones inside out and voila, the exact look I was going for and at a very reasonable price {less than $10 for 4}. I added some Martha Stewart chalkboard labels and again used a chalk pen to add relevant labels. For more permanent filing I invested in a grey cloth Philosophy lever arch binder; the cloth look gives an extra textural element to the space.#01 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014One of my favourite semi-DIY pieces in my work space is this simple glass laptop desk; one I actually picked up from Officeworks a few years back {for a similar product currently in stock try this desk}. I ordered a marble cut-off from Granite & Marble Works in the dimensions of the top of the desk {plus about 10mm each side} and used small gel protectors between the marble and the glass to keep it steady. A word of warning: real marble is heavy – even this small piece is hard for me to lift so if you are replicating this look make sure you choose a desk that will hold the weight.#08 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014#11 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014To add a little more personality to the space I put together a mood board of sorts above my desk. Using 3M Command picture mounting strips means I can change the items over when ever it suits. You can create a mood board from anything – magazine tears, your own photos, posters or prints. Officeworks offers extensive print and copy services so if you can’t bare to tear out a page from one of your favourite magazines, simply take it into Officeworks for a quality copy for your personal board. Photos can also be printed at Officeworks in a variety of sizes and finishes.#18 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014I also spotted this cute test tube rack storage and being a secret {or not-so-secret} science nerd I had to have it. The colours of the pins and paperclips available did not suit the styling so I purchased some gorgeous gold paperclips and added some clear pins I already owned. Don’t look at items just as they are, think about how you can utilise what you have to create something unique.#06 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014#16 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014The new space feels fresh, inviting, clutter free and, most importantly, much more organised. See for yourself – here is a before shot!#19 - Officeworks - master my workplace - styling and photography by catherine and grace - copyright 2014Want to make over your own workspace? I have a $100 gift card thanks to Officeworks to give away to one lucky reader. Simply comment on this post and let me know what Officeworks product or products you would purchase to Master Your Workspace or post a picture on Instagram of your current workspace and explain what you would like to change about it. If choosing to enter via Instagram don’t forget to tag me {@catherinegrace__} and Officeworks {@officeworks} and include the following hashtags #MasterMyWorkspace #candglovesofficeworks. 1. What a stunning workspace! It wouldn’t be hard to feel inspired in such a beautiful and organised space.
My current workspace is in dire need of a style makeover to turn it from drab to fab! Top of my shopping list would be that 5 drawer filing cabinet! Perfect for all my bits & bobs that sprawl across my desk. I would also add to the trolley a whole bunch of Masonite clip boards to display my inspiration images on my pegboard. I love the Philosophy grey cloth range so I’d pick up an expanding file for all my receipts that currently spill out of a plastic sleeve in no organised fashion at all. Finally, as the years creep on & my eye sight doesn’t keep up I’d add the Liteworks Job G-Clamp Lamp in Black – perfect for my sewing projects! Any money left would be spent on beautifully bright yellow Rhodia note pads, and the very handy and colourful moleskin note books – I’m forever writing notes on bits of paper to only lose them amongst the chaos!
Thank you for a great post and the possibility of an opportunity for a long overdue shopping trip to stationery Mecca!

  2. Hi Catherine, I live in a small Sydney unit so I’d love to purchase space saving solutions for e.g the five drawer filing cabinet – also gold paper clips would suit my personal styling business! Everything really would make my home office much more productive! Love your insta images you inspire me

  3. Your office space looks great! The office is always a tricky area to keep under control. I’d purchase the little filing drawers. How cute are they! And super practical. 🙂

  4. I would love to win the $100 voucher, your space is looking amazing. I’m loving those little filing cabinets and could really do with them in my little office for all of my receipts and business cards x

  5. Thank you for the inspiration! I am always helping my clients to get organised and leave my home office til last. I so need one of those 5 drawer units and some beautiful Martha Stewart accessories ❤

  6. Hi Catherine! I am in the middle of starting up my own mobile spray tanning business so I’m expecting the volume of my filing to grow! Currently I file my documents in an old grey filing cabinet that I took home from my 9 to 5 job when they were doing a clean up. It does the job but it’s definitely not pretty and does little to inspire me to keep on top of my filing! I would love to upgrade to the Spencer 10 drawer cabinet. They even have them in turquoise to match my business’ logo!

  7. Hi Catherine! My fiancé and I will be married in November and are currently on the hunt for a new place to set up home — as you can imagine, I have a lot of organising to do! We’ll be properly combining a lot of our precious documents and mementos for the first time. Your little filing cabinet might be just the thing I’m looking for. Great post and beautiful pictures x

  8. Hi Catherine, thanks for sharing your lovely tips and advice. How great is Officeworks?! My home studio is definitely in need of some love too, a new pinboard and paper storage solutions would definitely help me master my workspace again. xx

  9. Hello Catherine.
Makeover looks amazing! Where did you get that fab white shelving unit from?
    xx
